Team Schalk Win in Team Contest; Rohrbaugh Claims Professional Title in Fifth Corona Pro-Am

Westminster, Colo. – The Colorado PGA (COPGA) held its fifth Corona Premier Pro Am® Series event Monday at the Ranch Country Club in Westminster, Colorado. Typically the Corona Pro-Ams feature a COPGA Professional and any amateur; however, this event was a bit different as all amateurs were women. Monday’s event had perfect weather for golf, as sunny skies and minimal wind made it perfect for scoring conditions. The course was also in excellent condition thanks to the hard work of golf course superintendent Jeff Therrien, CGCS, Mark Avery, PGA, Director of Golf, and his entire golf staff. Per usual, the Pro-Ams have a morning shotgun, starting at 8:00 am, with the afternoon shotgun off at 1:30 pm.

With those excellent course conditions along with a perfect day for weather, scoring was indeed low, and none lower than the afternoon team of Matt Schalk, PGA, General Manager at Colorado National Golf Club, his daughter Hailey Schalk, Lauren Gooding and Callie Jean Burns who finished 24-under-par for a total of 118 in the team contest. Team Schalk took home a three-shot victory over the morning team of Katie Milstead, PGA of PEAK Golf Academy, Rosanna Cover, Linda Sue Chenowith, and Erin Houtsma, who finished at 21-under-par. In solo third with a 17-under-par score was the team of Doug Rohrbaugh, PGA, of River Valley Ranch Golf Course, Allyson Schomers, Meredith Feik, and Renee Magalong.

Though coming in third in the team contest, Rohrbaugh found even more success in the Professional contest firing a 3-under-par 68, claiming the low professional title. Four birdies highlighted Rohrbaugh’s day, with his lone bogey at the par 4, 18th hole. Finishing 1-shot back of Rohrbaugh was runner-up Geoff Keffer, PGA, of Lakewood Country Club, who carded a 2-under-par 69 with five birdies and three bogeys. It was a tight leaderboard as solo third-place finisher Grant Jackson, PGA, of Saddle Rock Golf Course, finished one shot shy of Keffer, posting a 1-under-par 70.

As is the case every week, a hole is chosen as the Corona Premier® Hole of the Week. This week it was the 145-yard par-3 8th. The hole isn’t long, but players must carry a small pond and a bunker that guard the front of the green. The green is also very undulating, sloping significantly from back to front, allowing shots a little long to feed down to the front right hole location.

Without Corona Premier® as our Title Sponsor, these Pro-Ams would not be possible. Corona Premier is a new partner of the Colorado PGA in 2023 and continues to be a great supporter of the Section and the Professionals in Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota. Thank you to our partner BioSteel and their sports drinks that supply clean, healthy hydration to players throughout the day.

We would like to thank Mark Avery, PGA, and his golf staff again for having The Ranch Country Club in great shape for another great Pro-Am Series event. The Colorado PGA tournament schedule will resume June 26th for the sixth Corona Premier® Pro-Am Series event of the season at RainDance National Golf Club.

Centennial, Colo. - It was a beautiful day to crown a champion at Valley Country Club for the 67th Colorado PGA Professional Championship. Geoff Keffer, PGA Assistant Professional at Lakewood Country Club began the day with a two-shot lead over Tristin Goodwin, PGA Assistant Professional at Cherry Hills Country Club. Goodwin started the day red hot as he birdied four of his first six holes and added an eagle on hole 5 as he holed his wedge shot from 40 yards out. After hole 6 Goodwin had flipped a two-shot deficit into a three-shot lead. “My strategy did not change, but my mindset definitely changed a little bit, I started to feel more pressure as I was leading the golf tournament now,” Goodwin said. Bogies on holes 7 and 9, the two par threes on the front nine, and a birdie from Keffer on 7, Goodwin and Keffer made the turn to the back nine dead even at 9-under-par.
