Ryan Pearson Claims One-Shot Victory at Colorado Assistant PGA Professional Championship

Meridian Golf Club PGA Assistant leads a trio of national qualifiers alongside Justin Carlock, PGA, and Ben Lanting, PGA, at Meadow Hills

Aurora, Colo. - Hot and humid conditions greeted the players as they arrived at Meadow Hills Golf Course for the first round of the Colorado Assistant PGA Professional Championship. A crowded leaderboard emerged Monday, August 10, following the opening round, with Brian Belz of Lenny’s Ski & Golf setting the pace after an impressive 5-under-par 65 to take a one-shot advantage into Tuesday’s final round.

With players beginning their championship rounds on the 10th hole, Brian Belz, Associate at Lenny’s Golf & Ski, got off to a great start, picking up his first birdie at the par-5 10th. He added another birdie at the par-5 16th and made the turn at 2-under. Belz continued to build momentum on his second nine, recording birdies at 2, 3 and 7 while keeping a bogey off his card. His five-birdie, bogey-free performance resulted in a 65 (5-under par) and gave him the overnight lead.

Ryan Pearson, PGA Assistant Professional at Meridian Golf Club, ended his first round one shot back after opening with a 4-under par, 66. Pearson made birdie at the 11th before giving the shot back with his lone bogey at the par-3 15th. He responded immediately with a birdie at the par-5 16th to make the turn at 1-under. Pearson then made his move over his closing nine, recording back-to-back birdies on holes 5 and 6 before adding another at the 9th to close his round and finish at 4-under par.

Four players, Will Grady, Associate at Eagle Springs Golf Club, Geoff Keffer, PGA Assistant Professional at Lakewood Country Club, Ben Lanting, PGA Assistant Professional at Bear Creek Golf Club, and James Roberts, Associate at Walking Stick Golf Course, ended their first round tied just two shots off the lead following matching rounds of 3-under par, 67.

Grady produced one of the most impressive stretches of the opening round. Beginning his round on Hole 10, he opened with an eagle at the par-5 before following it with consecutive birdies on 11 and 12. Another birdie at the par-5 16th helped Grady play his opening nine in a blistering 5-under par, 30. His second nine proved more challenging, as bogeys on holes 1, 3 and 5 brought him back toward the field before a birdie at the 9th allowed him to finish with a 3-under-par 67.

Keffer's first round 67 featured six birdies. After making the turn following a stretch that included a bogey at the 14th and consecutive birdies on holes 15 and 16, Keffer continued to find scoring opportunities on his closing nine, adding birdies on holes 3, 6 and 8 to finish the day at 3-under-par.

Lanting took a steadier route to his 67, playing bogey-free golf throughout the opening round. He picked up birdies at the 12th and 18th before making the turn, then added another at the par-5 6th on his closing nine to finish at 3-under.

Roberts also reached 3-under despite an eventful opening nine. He made birdies at 10 and 13 before a bogey at the 15th. Roberts answered with a birdie at the par-5 16th, but a double bogey at the par-3 17th brought him back to even. He responded immediately with a birdie at the 18th before making the turn, then built momentum on his closing nine with birdies at 1, 8, and 9 to secure his first-round 3-under 67.

Justin Carlock and Chris Kennedy had matching first rounds of 2-under-par, 68. Carlock reached 5-under-par early in his round following a birdie at the 10th, but gave three shots back before making the turn. He caught fire again on his closing nine, recording birdies at 1, 6, 7 and 8 to remain firmly in contention. Kennedy took a steadier path to 68, making a birdie at the par-5 16th on his opening nine before adding birdies at 2 and 6 around a bogey at the 8th on his closing nine.

Jeff Carter sat at 1-under-par 69 after a first round highlighted by a birdie at the par-3 17th on his opening nine and consecutive birdies on holes 3 and 4 after making the turn. Bill Hancock rounded out the top 10 at even-par 70, rebounding from a bogey on the 10th and later picking up a birdie at the par-3 17th.

With Belz at 5-under, Pearson one shot back at 4-under and four players sitting just two shots off the pace at 3-under, there was little separation among the championship contenders heading into the final round. Eight players began the final round within three shots of the lead, setting the stage for a tightly contested race to the finish.

The final round began just like the opening day, hot and humid with light winds, meaning scoring conditions were once again favorable. The leaders took advantage of the morning conditions, and with play once again beginning on Hole 10, the championship leaderboard quickly began to tighten as the contenders worked their way through their opening nine.

Will Grady made the biggest move of the morning. Beginning the day at 3-under-par and two shots behind overnight leader Brian Belz, Grady played holes 10 through 18 in 3-under-par 32 to surge to 6-under-par for the championship and take the lead at the turn. After opening with a par at the par-5 10th, Grady birdied the 11th and added another at the par-3 13th. He remained bogey-free from there before closing his opening nine in style, making birdies at the 16th and 18th around a bogey at the 12th. With four birdies against just one bogey, Grady moved to the top of the leaderboard with nine holes remaining in the 36-hole championship.

Ryan Pearson remained firmly in the hunt at 5-under-par with nine holes to play, one shot behind Grady. Pearson's opening nine was considerably more eventful. He bogeyed 10 and 11 before answering with a birdie at the par-3 13th. Another bogey at the 15th dropped him further back, but Pearson responded in a big way, hitting his 6-iron from 205 on the par-5 16th to 3 feet and knocking in the eagle putt. He followed it up with a birdie at the 18th to keep him within one shot of the lead heading to the final nine holes.

Justin Carlock also continued his climb up the leaderboard with a clean opening nine. Starting the day at 2-under-par, Carlock birdied the par-5 10th and added another at the 18th, surrounding those two birdies with seven pars for a bogey-free opening nine. That moved him to 4-under-par overall, just two shots behind Grady as the leaders made the turn into the final 9 holes of the championship.

Ben Lanting and James Roberts joined Carlock at 4-under-par for the championship, each playing the opening nine in 1-under-par.

With the final groups moving to their back nine, Grady held the championship lead at 6-under-par, Pearson was one back, and Carlock, Lanting and Roberts were all just two shots off the pace. Belz remained within striking distance at 3-under, leaving six players separated by only three shots as the championship entered its final stage.

Pearson quickly made his move on the back nine. “I knew where I was with Will [Grady], but I did not look at the leaderboard,” Pearson stated after a par on his 10th hole of the day. Pearson added birdies on the par-3 2nd and par-3 4th. His only mistake on the closing nine came with a bogey at the par-4 5th, but he responded with a par at the par-5 6th before a birdie on the 7th, which proved to be the critical moment in the championship, which brought Pearson to 7-under-par, where he finished, to secure victory by a single shot. “I came close last year, losing in a playoff for an alternate spot, and since then I was ready to come back this year,” Pearson said. Pearson, who is a newly elected Class A member to the PGA of America and a Member of the Colorado Section, is excited to carry this momentum into two weeks from now and continue his strong play in his first Colorado PGA Professional Championship at Walnut Creek Golf Preserve. “Just knowing I'm playing well, obviously the Section Championship’s another step up and Walnut Creek Golf Preserve is a tough long course too, so you're going to make bogeys out there as well, just trying to make as many birdies as you can to offset it,” Pearson stated.

Carlock continued one of the strongest final-round charges in the field. After playing holes 10–18 in 2-under-par 33, he opened his final nine with a par before making his only bogey of the day at the par-3 2nd. Carlock answered immediately with a birdie on hole 3 and added two more on holes 5 and 7. He closed with consecutive pars on 8 and 9 for another 2-under-par 33, completing a 4-under-par 66 in the final round and a tied-for-second-place finish, earning his ticket to Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Lanting matched Carlock at 6-under-par with a remarkably steady finish of his own. After turning at 4-under for the championship, Lanting opened holes 1 through 5 with five consecutive pars. He then took advantage of the par-5 6th with a birdie and followed it with another at the par-4 7th. Two closing pars completed a bogey-free 2-under-par 33 over his final nine and a 3-under-par 67 for the day. Matching rounds of 67 left Lanting at 6-under-par for the championship, tied with Carlock for second and securing his spot in the National Assistant PGA Professional Championship in November.

Grady, meanwhile, entered the final nine in the strongest position of the four after his brilliant 3-under 32 on holes 10 through 18 moved him to 6-under-par and into the outright lead. His momentum continued immediately after the turn, as he birdied the par-4 1st to reach 7-under-par for the championship and strengthen his hold on the top spot.

The closing stretch, however, proved costly. Grady gave the shot back with a bogey at the par-3 2nd before settling down with pars on holes 3 and 4. A bogey at the par-4 5th dropped him back to 5-under, but with the championship still within reach, Grady steadied himself with three consecutive pars on holes 6, 7 and 8. Needing something on his final hole, he was unable to find the closing birdie and closed with a bogey at the 9th, leading to a solo fourth-place finish and the first alternate position for the National Championship in November.

The Colorado Section will send 3 eligible* qualifiers to the National Assistant PGA Professional Championship scheduled to be played November 12-15, 2026 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Vail, Colo. - September 30, 2025 - In a thrilling conclusion to this year's Colorado PGA West Chapter Championship, Chris Kennedy of Murphy Creek Golf Course emerged victorious after a tightly contested battle that needed to be settled via a sudden-death playoff. Kennedy posted rounds of 68 and 71 to finish at 1-under-par (139), securing the win on the first playoff hole over Justin Carlock of Eaton Country Club, who matched the same two-day total after a brilliant second round of 4-under-par 66, the lowest round of the tournament. Carlock’s charge up the leaderboard showcased clutch shot-making and nerves of steel, but Kennedy’s consistent play across both days proved enough to edge out the win. “Today is my Dad’s birthday, and he passed away 2 years ago, so to win this championship today makes it extra special,” Kennedy said. Kennedy’s final round consisted of three birdies and four bogies to finish at 1-under-par for the 36 holes and dead even with Carlock. Finishing in a tie for third were John Gorell, Associate Professional, and Chris Johnson, PGA, General Manager, both from The Country Club of Woodmoor, who both finished at even par for the 36 holes. Johnson was the 2010 West Chapter Champion. Finishing in solo fifth place was 2025 Section Champion, Geoff Keffer, PGA Assistant Professional at Lakewood Country Club, after firing rounds of 71-70 for a two-day total of 1-over-par. Capturing victory in the Senior Division was PGA General Manager Chris Johnson. Johnson fired rounds of 68-72 to post an even par total and a five-shot victory. A huge thanks to all of our partners for the West Chapter Championship.
